落語 / Rakugo, Japanese performing art

Rakugo is a traditional Japanese performing art.

It is a sit-down comedy performance by a lone storyteller sitting on his knees on a floor cushion.

The story is usually the dialog of two or more characters and develops only through talk and gestures.  A folding fan (sensu) or a towel (tenugui) is sometimes used as a prop.

The rakugo performer tells a long and humorous story, sitting the whole time, and plays the characters with little expression, moving the eyes only a little, changing the tone of voice a little and using only slight turns of the head.  It is a hard skill to master.

落語をはじめて生で見ました。

面白かった！のひと言に尽きますが
さすがプロだなあと感動したのは
ずっと観客を笑わせ続けるその話術のみならず
複数の人物を演じ分ける技術です。

少し目線を動かし、
多少声の調子を変え、
わずかに頭を動かす、という
ちょっとした動作で違う人物を表現し、会話が進んでいきます。
（それが落語なのですが^^）

実際に目の前で見ると
これがプロの技なんだと思って
笑いながらその動きに注目していました。
