夏祭り / summer festival

Summer festivals are hugely popular in Japan.

The Gion festival in Kyoto and the Tenjin festival in Osaka are especially famous, as well as the Kanda festival in Tokyo, which is held every May.  These are considered to be the three great festivals of Japan.

Summer festivals of varying size are held by local shrines throughout Japan and each has their own charm.

It is said that many summer festivals originated as religious rituals to counteract epidemics.


日本の夏の風物詩といえば、まずは夏祭りですね。

特に有名なのは、京都の祇園祭と大阪の天神祭。
このふたつのお祭りはどちらも毎年7月に開催され、毎年5月に催される東京の神田祭とあわせて、日本三大祭りと言われています。

それほど規模の大きなものでなくても、全国各地にある大小さまざまな神社でその地域の伝統を受け継いだお祭りが行われており、それぞれに味わいがあります。

例えば、こんなふうに地車の宮入りを間近でみるとかなりの迫力です。

夏祭りは、本来、疫病や伝染病から身を守るために、神様を祀った神事が起源となっているものが多いようです。
